Superb Royal Navy HMS Ajax Ship Buiders Badge by Vickers-Armstrong (d.1934)
HMS Ajax was a Leander-class light cruiser which served with the RN, built by Vicker s-Armstrong in Barrow in Furness in 1934. She was commissioned in 1935 for service with the 8th Cruiser Squadron on the America and West Indies Station.
During WW2 she served in the following theatres-
River Plate 1939
Mediterranean 1940–41
Cape Matapan 1941
Greece 1941
Crete 1941
Malta Convoys 1941
Aegean 1944
Normandy 1944
South France 1944.
She became famous for her part in the Battle of the River Plate, hunting down the German raider, Admiral Graf Spee. In response to her threat, Force G was formed, which included Ajax (flagship, Commodore Henry Harwood), Exeter and Achilles, all cruisers.(Cumberland, also took part in this force, which was undergoing a refit at Port Stanley)
The 9” badge is in fine fettle, it’s cast in nickel-plated bronze and mounted on ebonised wooden board with suspension hook to the rear.
