Superb Vintage Scratchbuilt Motorised WW2 Royal Navy HMS Atheling Escort Carrier Model
HMS Atheling (D51) was a Royal Navy Ruler-class escort carrier, commissioned in 1943. Originally the USS Glacier of the US Navy, built by the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation (Tacoma, Washington) under Maritime Commission Contract but loaned to the RN in October 1943.
Atheling ferried RN squadrons to the Far East in April 1944 which included 822 NAS and 823 NAS with their Fairey Barracudas at Madras and 1837 NAS and 1838 NAS (Vought Corsair II) disembarking at Ceylon. At Trincomalee , Atheling took on 1383 NAS and 899 NAS aircraft and personnel, ten Corsair and ten Supermarine Seafires respectively and from November 1944 into 1945, she was engaged on aircraft ferry duties for British and US fleets. After the war she was used as troopship before return to the US.
This well crafted wooden hand built model is in fine fettle with just the odd minor imperfections commensurate with its age & use. It’s well detailed with 8 Hawker Hurricanes ranged on deck with a further one coming up from between decks in the hanger lift. The deck also has several arresting cables, a raft of anti-aircraft arnament and full scaled bridge superstructure.
The deck is removable, gaining access to the inner hull which is fitted with a motor, other ancillaries and a battery, when hooked up it just about fires the motor up so it will need recharging.
Overall, it measures 42”L x 10”W x 13”H and comes with a purpose built stand.
