Due to popular demand…..
HMS Ajax was a Leander class frigate of the RN, built by the famous Cammell Laird company of Birkenhead. She was commissioned in 1963 but originally destined to be a Rothesay Class Frigate called HMS Fowey, but instead became a Batch 1 Leander class frigate.
She had a busy service career with stints on Beira patrol, Hong Kong & Gibraltar Guardship and assisted in the evacuation of British citizens after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.
She was on patrol in the Persian Gulf during the Falklands but subsequently became part of the South Atlantic Protection Force in 1984.
She participated in further deployments that culminated in the highlight of her final year in 1985 when she escorted HMY Britannia, which took a number of the Royal Family on a tour of Italy.
She was decommissioned 31 May 1985, then replaced HMS Salisbury as a static training ship at Devonport. On 3 August 1988, Ajax arrived at Millom, Cumbria to be broken up.
This superb hand crafted motorised 6ft long model is in fine fettle, with just a few minor areas of wear commensurate with her age and use. It depicts the ship in her early stages of her career, with the twin 4.5 gun on the foscle, triple ASW Limbo mortars to the quarterdeck and a pair of twin 40mm Bofors mounted on the hanger roof.
The superstructure comes away from the hull to reveal the motor’s etc within and overall she measures 184”L x 21”H x 8”W.
Great display model or ready to terrorise a pond again.
