Edgar was a Royal Navy Agamemnon Class, 2nd Rate Wooden Screw Ship of the Line, launched at Woolwich in 1858. Initially Commanded by Captain James Edward Katon, flagship of Rear-Admiral John Elphinstone Erskine, second in command, Channel squadron.
The 19thC sailors folk-art sailors wool work is in fine fettle with a good aged patina. It depicts HMS Edgar flying a blue flag at the mizen, which indicates Rear-Admiral of the “Blue John”Elphinstone Erskine is onboard and she is also flying the RN white ensign on the Quarterdeck.
The colours to the wool within the flags and Queens Crown that surround the ship, are still very vivid and also has Laurel leaves to the base with a ribbon bearing the ships name below.
It’s nicely presented in its original glazed 27” x 22” Walnut frame with gilt inner and has an open area to the back.
