This patented reversible saloon chair by Rowan , was often found on public transportation and allows the seat to rotate 180 degrees, effectively changing the direction the passenger faces. The invention of a reversible seat dates back to 1915, with a patent application filed in 1913.

This particular one came off a Union Castle Ocean-liner and is in fine fettle. Union-Castle Line was a British shipping line that operated a fleet of passenger liners and cargo ships between Europe and Africa from 1900 until 1955, when it merged with Clan Line.

The chair is made predominantly from mahogany with a decorative nautical designed cast iron base, fitted with a superb and unscathed woven seat base. The backrest has a carved crest for the shipping company and is extremely sturdy. It stands 31”H x 19”D with the seat base 17.5” H and armrests 28”H x 28”W.
