Product Details

Superb 19thC Marine or Navy Leather & Baleen Boatswain’s Persuader or “Starter”.

A "bosun's persuader" was a short, weighted club used by boatswains in the Royal Navy for discipline and press-ganging. It was also known as a "starter" or "cosh" and was typically a flexible shaft with weighted ends, often covered in knotted cord, lead, or baleen. Its purpose was to physically coerce or "persuade" lazy sailors to work and to force unwilling individuals into naval service on shore.
This particular 16.5” long naval artefact has a wonderful used patina, with some loses commensurate with its age & use. Made in baleen with leaded ends and covered in hand sewn leather.
