This amazing collection just keeps on giving, throwing up some amazing finds and never seen before photography. This piece, which came to us as part of Captain R.J Campbell’s collection is no exception.
Made
in solid mahogany with the battle honour “Falkland Island 1982” skillfully carved into the raised ribbon was awarded to the Survey Vessel “HMS Hydra”, which was part of the original task force sent to recapture the Falkland Islands & South Georgia that had fallen into the hands of the aggressive Argentinian Forces.
She, alongside her sister ships Herald & Hecla were converted into hospital ships and were tasked in recovering injured service personnel from both countries and transferring them to the main hospital ship “SS Uganda”.
HMS Hydra was the last unit of the original Operation Corporate Task Force to return to the UK, arriving to an extraordinary welcome in Portsmouth on 24 September 1982, the Hydrographer of the Navy, Rear Admiral David Haslam, embarked for the passage from Spithead, his flag flying from the ship's HiFix mast so as not to displace the “Red Cross flag” from the mainmast (which we also have and is now making its way back to the Falkland Islands)
