Original Lord Nelson Funeral Anthem Ephemera by George Frederick Handel Esq d.1805
This superb extremely rare original Royal Navy, Battle of Trafalgar & Lord Nelson artefact is in fine fettle and well presented behind UV70 anti-reflective glass to protect it for years to come.
It’s the “Anthem” especially adapted by George Frederick Handel Esq, based on his 1737 work “The Ways of Zion do Mourn” and re-named “His body is buried in Peace”. This was performed at St Paul’s Cathedral on the 5th December 1805 and during the 4 hour long state funeral of Lord Nelson prior to the Sermon on January 9th 1806.
It reads, “An Anthem (to be performed preceding the Sermon) before the R.Hon, The Lord Mayor, Aldermen and corporation of the City of London, His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge & Staff and the Hon. Artillery Co on Thursday 5th December 1805 at St Paul’s Cathedral, being the appointed day for a General Thanksgiving for the late Signal & Important Victory obtained by His Majesty’s Ships of War, under the Command of the late Vice-Admiral Lord Viscount Nelson, over the Combined Fleets of France & Spain. (The music by George Frederick Handel, Esq).
It also mentions a Duet, Solo and Grand Chorus below the title and has a pencil annotated & ink correction to an ode, viewable from a reverse window, and is titled “The Battle of Trafalgar”. This was written and signed by the “Earl of Mulgrave” and dated in pencil “1805”. (General Henry Phipps, 3rd Baron Mulgrave and at the time the Foreign Secretary 1805-06).
This is naval history at its finest!
