Nicely Presented Royal Navy HMS Rodney WW2 Salvaged Bronze Bell c.1949
Rodney was one of two Nelson-class battleships built for the RN, built by Cammell Laird of Birkenhead, commissioned in 1927.
The ship entered service in 1928, and spent her pre-war career with the Atlantic and Home Fleets, sometimes serving as a flagship when her sister ship, Nelson, was being refitted. During the early stages of WW2, she searched for German commerce raiders, participated in the Norwegian Campaign, Normandy landings and escorted convoys in the Arctic, Mediterranean & Atlantic Ocean.
But Rodney is mostly remembered for her major role in the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck in mid-1941.
After the ship escorted one convoy through the Arctic to the Soviet Union in late 1944, she returned in poor condition from extremely heavy use and a lack of refits, and so she was reduced to reserve in late 1945 and was finally scrapped in 1948.
This 7” x 7” bell was made from salvaged bronze when the ship was broken up in 1949 by the famous metal merchants “Thos. W Ward” in Inverkeithing, Scotland. It’s cast with the details “From Ex-HMS Rodney, Dismantled Inverkeithing 1949” and is well presented in a solid oak frame with brass finial.
