Large Norwegian Crude Oil Tanker “Ferncrest” Ships bell and Cradle. C.1956
The Ferncrest, the largest motor-tanker in the world when commissioned early in 1956 was built by Eriksberg Mekaniske Verksted Gøteborg Sweden for A/S Marina & Skips A/S Varild and ran out of Oslo, Norway.
She
weighed in at 34,800 dwt when completed in 1956 by the Eriksberg yard at Gothenburg and had dimensions of 682 feet long, a beam of 87 feet, and a loaded draft of 35.5 feet. She was equipped with Chadburn electric telegraphs, BTH radar, Sperry gyrocompass and automatic pilot, Decca Navigator, and a Kelvin Hughes echo sounder. She had a service speed of sixteen knots from a ten cylinder two stroke single acting supercharged B & W oil engine of 12,500 bhp.
This huge and very heavy solid bronze ships bell is approximately 16”H with a flare of the same size. It’s embossed with the ships name and has a fair few dinks from being rung. It’s hung within a purpose built solid oak cradle that overall measures 20”W x 12”D x 22”H.
A befitting large bell for the largest tanker in the world at the time!
