Fantastic Glass Cased WW2 Royal Navy Destroyer HMS Fury Steam Powered Model
HMS Fury was a plucky F-class destroyer built for the RN, commissioned in 1935.
During WW2 she served with distinction whilst providing an escort for the Arctic Convoys as part of the 8th Destroyer Flotilla and was also involved in the Malta Convoys as part of “Force H”. She participated in Operation Catapult, the Attack on Mers-el-Kébir, Operations Hat, Coat, White, the Battle of Cape Spartivent, Operations Excess, Picket & Grog.
After a brief refit in Malta, Fury was back in the thick of it participating in Operation Winch, escorting a delivery of a dozen Hurricane fighters to Malta, Operations Tiger, Splice, Rocket, Tracer & Railway, all part of Force H.
Before joining the Arctic Convoys, she was involved with Operations Substance, Style & Halberd, again all convoys to Malta.
She joined the 8th Destroyer Flotilla based in Scapa Flow and was was influential in 7 Convoys including QP6, PQ12, PQ13, QP10, PQ16, QP12 & convoy QP17.
She briefly returned to the Mediterranean to provide close escorts part of Force X for Operation Pedestal before escorting the damaged Battleship Nelson back to Britain for repairs.
She rejoined the Arctic convoys PQ18 & QP14 before having another much needed refit, returning to Russia soon afterwards with convoy JW 51A, RA51 & RA53.
She then joined the Home Fleet, providing escorts in the North Atlantic, assigned to the 4th Escort Group, screening Convoy HX 231, Convoy HX 234 and Convoy ONS 5 (where they drove off U-boat wolfpacks). In May 43, she escorted Convoy ON 184 before beginning a brief refit on the Humber, before returning to the Mediterranean to bolster the Med fleet prior to the Sicily landings. She was also involved with Ops Baytown and was part of the covering force for the Allied invasion of Italy at Salerno.
She then returned to the U.K for a much needed major refit before several weeks of training in preparation for her role as a shore bombardment ship during the Normandy landings, sailing from Scapa Flow to HMNB Portsmouth on 26 May. The ship was assigned to Bombardment Force E, supporting Juno Beach and the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division and No. 48 (Royal Marine) Commando assaulting the beach.
Sadly Fury met her fate shortly afterwards when she and HMS Faulknor left the Solent as the escort for the minesweepers of Convoy J-1. Fury was returning to Portsmouth for supplies when she detonated a ground mine off Juno Beach during a gale, after several failed attempts to tow her back, which created more damage, she finally made it back to England where a survey declared her a constructive total loss, and the ship was sold to Thos. W. Ward for scrap.
