Extremely Rare WW2 Royal Navy HMS Ajax Bronze/Mahogany Name Board c.1935-49
HMS Ajax was a WW2 Leander-class light cruiser which served with the RN, initially commissioned in 1935.
She became famous for her part in the Battle of the River Plate, successfully chasing the German Commerce raider “Admiral Graf Spee” as the Flagship of Force G under the command of Commodore Henry Harwood, along with the cruisers HMS Exeter and Achilles and HMS Cumberland.
She was also heavily involved with the Malta Convoys, the Battle of Crete, the Battle of Malta and as a supply escort in the siege of Tobruk.
This amazing RN Cruiser was finally decommissioned in 1948 and after a bit of hoohar she was sent for scrap at Cashmore's, in Newport, South Wales in 1949.
The Nameboard is in good used and weathered condition, with bags of patina to the bronze letters and reverse. It measures 41”L x 13.5”H with 9” letters.
