Antique Tugboat “Fighting Cock” Solid Bronze Ships Bell c.1902-1946
The Steam Screw Tug “Fighting Cock” was initially an under powered Dutch Tug called “Mona”, built by L. Smit & Zoon of Holland in 1884.
It was acquired by “Liverpool Screw Towing Lighterage Co (H. Edwards)” in 1902, informally known as “Cock Tugs”.
They straight away had the engine rebuilt by Laird Bros of Birkenhead to improve it performance and a “Cock” was proudly mounted on the top of the mast.
By the 1930’s the company had a large fleet of cock tugs called, Black Cock, East Cock, Fighting Cock, Flying Cock, Heather Cock, Marsh Cock, May Cock, North Cock, Peacock, Parie Cock, Sea Cock, South Cock, Storm Cock, Thistle Cock, Weather Cock, West Cock and Wood Cock!
She was eventually sold in 1946 to “Toyne, Carter & Co of Fowey”, initially keeping the name before again being sold to “Fowey Tug Co” and re-named “Trethosa”.
The weathered bronze 8” bell, with an 8” flare is in good used condition with an excellent exterior patina. It retains its original 7” clapper and 19” long bell rope and has the tugs name embossed to the front of the bell!
Ding Dong!
